  • A hidden layer of recycled rubber is sewn between the outer fabric and lining, helping the basket hold its shape and stand upright.

MAKING
  • Each Boda Basket is made in several stages by women artisans through a Fair Trade organisation.
  • Locally grown jute is naturally dyed using age-old methods, then handspun by artisans.
  • The jute is handwoven on traditional backstrap looms by women in indigenous hill communities in northern Bangladesh.
  • Working from their homes, the women weave the jute into lengths of two-tone fabric.
  • The finished fabric is taken to a Fair Trade sewing workshop in Dhaka, where it is cut, lined and sewn into baskets.
  • The macramé jute handles are added and finished by hand.
  • These different stages bring together specialised skills while providing ongoing work and fair wages across artisan groups.
CARE
  • Use for dry laundry only. Prolonged exposure to moisture may lead to mould or discolouration. If using for plants, place a waterproof liner or tray inside to protect the basket.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight, as jute will naturally change colour over time.
  • Baskets are gently folded for shipping and may need reshaping on arrival. Press out any creases, then fill with towels or blankets to help restore shape.
  • Vacuum regularly or take outside and shake to remove dust.
  • Blot spills immediately with an absorbent cloth. Do not rub, as this may spread the stain or loosen fibres.
  • For oil-based or coloured spills, consult a professional cleaner.
  • You may choose to apply a protection treatment suitable for natural fibres before use.
FAQ'S

What is the difference between Charcoal and Earth? Both colours are created by interweaving two rows of naturally dyed jute with two rows of natural jute. Earth combines warm brown with natural, while Charcoal combines very dark grey with natural. Refer to the product images to see the colours and woven detail more closely.

Does the basket hold its shape? Yes. A hidden internal layer of recycled rubber helps the basket hold its shape and stand upright, even when empty.

Is the lining removable? No, the cotton lining is fixed in place.

What can it be used for? In addition to laundry, it can be used for storing toys, exercise or yoga gear and other everyday items.

Will it be shipped upright or folded? This basket is folded for shipping and will need reshaping on arrival. Unfold and press out any creases with your hands, then fill with towels or blankets for a day or two to help restore shape.

Can it be used for wet laundry? We recommend using the basket for dry laundry only. Prolonged exposure to moisture may lead to mould or discolouration, so wet items should be dried before placing inside.

Can it be used to hold plants? Yes, but we recommend placing a deep plastic tray or waterproof liner inside to protect the basket from moisture and potential mould.

From Their Hands To Yours

The jute fabric for each Boda Basket is handwoven on backstrap looms by women in indigenous hill communities in northern Bangladesh, using techniques passed down through generations. Working from their homes, locally grown jute is naturally dyed and handspun before being woven into lengths of two-tone fabric.

The loom is lightweight and mobile, made from bamboo poles with a strap worn around the weaver’s back. One end is anchored in the ground while the weaver’s body creates the tension needed to weave. Its portability allows the women to weave around daily life.

The finished fabric is taken to a Fair Trade workshop, where it is cut, lined and sewn into the basket before the macramé jute handles are added by hand. This process brings together specialised skills across different artisan groups while providing ongoing work and fair wages.
