MATERIALS
  • Made entirely from natural jute, with its characteristic raw texture and natural variation.
  • Hand-twisted jute twine forms the macramé base, with layers of jute tassels creating depth and texture.
  • Natural variations in the jute fibres, including occasional darker flecks, are characteristic of the material.
  • Finished with a hand-embossed and hand-stitched leather logo label.
MAKING
  • Each Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging takes approximately two weeks to make, with the work completed from home around daily family and community life.
  • Artisans finely hand-twist long lengths of natural jute twine before weaving the intricate macramé base.
  • More than 500 tassels are individually made by folding measured lengths of jute and binding them at the top with fine jute twine.
  • Each tassel is tied to the macramé base by hand, one by one and row by row, gradually building the wall hanging’s distinctive layers.
  • Macramé skills have been practised across three generations within these village communities.
  • The artisans receive fair wages and regular work, and often create pieces alongside members of their extended families and neighbouring women.
CARE
  • Your wall hanging will arrive folded for shipping, so some of the tassels may be a little bent when first unpacked.
  • Once hung, gently comb through the tassels with your fingers to separate and arrange them. To help any bends straighten more quickly, gently fold them back in the opposite direction.

  • To remove dust, take the wall hanging outside on a dry day and gently shake it, or use a vacuum cleaner on a low setting with a soft brush attachment.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight and avoid getting the jute wet or using cleaning products.
  • Occasional darker flecks within the jute are a natural characteristic of the fibre rather than marks or stains.
FAQ'S

Does the Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging come with a hanging rod? No. A hanging rod is not included, allowing you to choose a finish that suits your interior.

What type of rod should I use? We recommend a rod approximately 110cm / 43.3in long and 20–25mm / 0.8–1in in diameter. Timber dowel is a simple option, or you could use bamboo, a branch or metal tubing in a finish that suits your space.

How do I hang the Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging? The wall hanging has macramé loops along the top for threading onto your chosen rod. You will need two hooks or screws to support the rod, one at each end. As the wall hanging weighs approximately 3–4kg / 6.6–8.8lb, use wall plugs and hooks suitable for the weight and your wall type. For more advice, see our Wall Hanging Care & Hanging Guide: https://thedharmadoor.com/pages/care-hanging-guide-wall-art

How will my Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging be shipped? Your wall hanging will arrive folded for shipping, so some of the tassels may be a little bent when first unpacked. Once hung, gently comb through the tassels with your fingers to separate and arrange them. To help any bends straighten more quickly, gently fold them back in the opposite direction.

How do I clean my Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging? For regular cleaning, take your wall hanging outside on a dry day and gently shake it to remove dust. You can also use a vacuum cleaner on a low setting with a soft brush attachment. Avoid getting the jute wet or using cleaning products.

Where does the Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging work best?
Its generous scale is particularly suited to expansive walls, high ceilings and open living or dining spaces. The substantial layers of jute also have natural sound-absorbing qualities, helping to soften acoustics in rooms with hard surfaces.

Will my Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging look exactly like the one pictured? Each Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging is made by hand from natural jute, so variations in the fibres, macramé, tassels and finished form are part of the character of each piece.

Can the Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging be made to a custom size? Yes. Our artisan partners can make the Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging in different dimensions to suit your space, including larger sizes for large walls and commercial or hospitality interiors. From Their Hands To Yours

The Jumbo Tassel Wall Hanging is handcrafted by women artisans living in village communities in southern Bangladesh. Each piece passes through their hands from beginning to end, as they twist natural jute into long lengths of twine, weave the macramé base and make and tie each of its 500+ tassels. It’s meticulous work, requiring considerable skill and attention to detail to create the consistency, structure and finish of each piece.

The organisation we work with first introduced macramé to women in the 1970s as a way to generate income from home. Those skills have been passed down through generations, with women often working alongside extended family and neighbours, fitting their work around family life. Our partnership has continued for over a decade, supporting regular work and fair wages alongside the organisation’s broader commitment to education, health, financial security and the communities in which these women and their families live.
