Designed to protect tabletops while adding natural texture, the Malu Jute Placemats are handwoven from jute and cotton in warm, neutral tones. Sold as a set of eight, they create a textural foundation for everyday meals and special occasions and pair beautifully with the matching Malu Table Runner.
How many placemats are included? Each set includes eight Malu Jute Placemats.
Can I place hot plates and dishes directly on the placemats? The jute and cotton weave helps protect your tabletop from heat, but we recommend using one of our Hemp Trivets or Hemp Hot Mats beneath very hot cookware and serving dishes.
Is there a matching table runner? Yes. The Malu Table Runner - Natural is made using the same jute and cotton weave, creating a coordinated table setting.
Are the placemats suitable for everyday use? Yes. Their durable, flat woven construction makes them suitable for everyday meals as well as special occasions.
Can I wash the placemats? We don't recommend machine washing or soaking them. Shake regularly to remove crumbs and dust, and blot spills promptly with an absorbent cloth. Allow them to dry completely if they become damp.
Flat woven construction creates a durable, structured surface for everyday use.
Braided natural jute and warm-toned cotton are handwoven together for a textural finish.
Hand-stitched jute edging gives each end its distinctive handmade character.
Generous size helps protect surfaces while creating a defined setting for each place.
We partner with a Fair Trade organisation in Bangladesh that supports the women who make our Malu Placemats through both weaving and sewing.
The fabric is woven by women in rural communities, working from their homes or in shared village weaving spaces. Natural jute is first braided by hand into long lengths, then woven together with cotton on traditional wooden looms using skills passed down through generations.
The woven fabric is then sent to Dhaka, where women in a Fair Trade sewing workshop cut each runner to size and finish the ends with hand-stitched jute edging. Together, these stages bring the skills of two groups of women to each piece, providing fair, consistent work across both weaving and sewing communities.
